It’s completely normal to find yourself intimidated and anxious around important or highly influential people. What makes us human is our ability to influence and be influenced, so it’s natural to notice and find yourself reacting to other people’s power or accomplishments.

It’s important to remember that talking to successful people should be just like interacting with anyone else. People respond better to others that are emitting confidence. It’s best to see conversing with those far more accomplished than yourself as a fantastic opportunity to learn in a mutual exchange without coming across as overly opportunistic.

With a few mindset shifts, you can help decrease your anxiety and be a great conversationalist no matter who you’re talking to. So here’s How to Talk to Successful People – 3 Scripts to Use When You’re Conversing with Highly Accomplished Individuals.

Script 1 | Preparing Introductions

 

What industry are you in?

Is this an industry you’ve always wanted to work in?

Are you reading any good books right now? I’d love some recommendations.

Do you frequent the [club/ restaurant/ gallery] scene? Do you have any venues you would recommend?

What do you think of this [event/ city/ country etc.]?

So how do you know [Insert event organizer’s name]?

I wanted to tell you how great your jacket is…

When you’ve been introduced you’ll need a handy list conversation starters like these.

Practice them until they become second nature and don’t forget your body language, this means standing up straight, making eye contact and smiling. Don’t skip on the firm handshake if you want to feel better when interacting with highly accomplished people, you’ll need to project genuine confidence.

or…

Well looks like I’m needed over there- great to meet you [Insert Name].

There are many reasons why someone may respond in less approachable manner when you try to talk them.

They may have just had an argument, been under a lot pressure in that moment, their caught off guard or they may have had people try to use them in the past- we bet their response has very little to do with you as a person so please don’t take things personally.

What matters is that put put your best foot forward and now you can gracefully remove yourself from  the conversation with your head held high.

Script 3 | When You’re Asked About Yourself

 

Thanks for asking. I’m… [Introduce your best qualities without over-hyping or deflating your achievements].

The secret to chatting with those you perceive to be of higher status than you is to spend more time asking questions and listening rather relaying a list of accomplishments to try to overcompensate.

That said, now is not the time to undermine your own achievements, confidently talk about yourself but if you feel uncomfortable keep it short and sweet. 

Understand that successful people are human, they make mistakes and have had to go on a journey similar to yours to get to where they wanted to be. Remember that conversation is just about two or more people connecting with one another, the goal should be to have a positive social experience.
