Unfortunately, when you give a certain type of person the shield of anonymity to hide behind in the form of a digital screen, you may be confronted with nasty or inappropriate comments. Online trolls like to upset people because they can.

They’re not concerned with the wellbeing of others and they get some sort of weird enjoyment out of making others angry or frustrated. These aren’t people worth your precious time and energy but sometimes we cannot help but let them under our skin.

Generally speaking, the best way to handle a troll is to ignore them completely. Responding to mean comments just adds more fuel to the fire and trolls have no power when people don’t engage with them.

It’s best not to condone their behavior by responding to it; if you give trolls a reaction, technically the troll gets exactly what they want. This can be difficult, especially if the troll is particularly offensive, abusive, or hateful.

However, in some cases, ignoring online haters just isn’t an option. That’s why we’ve written 6 of the best high-road comeback messages for online haters:

Comeback 1 | Question their Motives

Interesting? What exactly do you mean by that?

This gives the person the opportunity to rethink what they have typed/said. For most people who may have not thought about the impact of their words before they posted them, this will be enough to deter them from going any further. If this person continues with their abuse, the best option is to block or ignore them.

Lots of online platforms have this awesome feature where you can add a filter containing a list of banned words; meaning that if a comment contains any of those words, they’ll automatically be blocked. Hi [Insert Name], If you’re feeling sick/ [Insert relevant part of their comment] we suggest [Insert positive suggestion, like using your product or watching your videos for example]. Make sure you enjoy it at optimal temperature it will help warm up your cold dead heart. We hope you feel much better!

This script was inspired by the  #campbellssoup comeback which we thought was literally perfect. If someone expresses so much hate best thing to do is respond with a whole lot of lurve. Not only will you be helping the cause, but you can delight in the fact that the troll will end up looking very stupid.

Comeback 3 | Call their Behavior Out

Hi @[Insert User Name], I’m not sure you aware but this is a positive space. Whilst you are entitled to your opinion, we are under no obligation to listen to it. You’re going to be blocked.

Comeback 5 | Wish them Well

Hi @[Insert User’s Name], thank you for your comment. Whilst it doesn’t really affect me either way, I hope YOU’RE feeling much better now.

Hi @[Insert User’s Name], I love you and I’m sorry that whatever has caused you to post this comment has happened to you.

Happy people don’t go out of their way to hurt others, remember that the next time someone lashes out online. You’re simply a reminder of something that’s missing or lacking in their lives. Don’t rise to the bait and take the high road.

Comeback 6 | Fun Fact

Hey @[Insert Username], I’ve got a fun fact for you, did you know that what we see around us is actually a reflection of what’s going on within ourselves? Have you ever stopped to think that if you think I’m an [Insert their Insult] maybe it’s because that’s what you really think of yourself? Just a thought – much love x

Hey @[Insert Username], did you know that 99% of internet trolls, troll because they have nothing in their own lives going on? That’s a whole lot of people wasting a whole lot of life!

This is similar to the ‘poke fun at them’ comeback we made earlier.

Comeback 6 | The Instruction

Hey @[Insert Username], I’m sorry that you did not like my content and that it annoyed you so much. I’ve since placed a tiny cross that will pop up next to all my videos- next time I’m [Insert their Insult] feel free to click the little red ‘X’ mark at anytime. Have an amazingly inspirational day!

Only god gets to chose that my friend, I suggest you focus on what YOU can control. I do hope you find your inner peace x
